Reality bites Adam Lambert?
There’s nothing real about reality television. Most of us know this already, but that doesn’t tend to detract from our enjoyment of the completely fabricated situation. If you buy into the farce and fantasy of television and seek to shut down your brain for a while, you more than likely have at least sampled reality TV. Imagine yourself as a contestant, competing for a big pot of money and fame. It’s easy… sitting back, wanting that money.

Going in, I must be honest. I accept that everything on television is rigged, including the news. Everything is an edited, subjective version of reality. This Idol controversy only serves to prove the point to me.
Scott Sabatini blogs for the Examiner that the latest American Idol election is currently under scrutiny. An Arkansas news station reported that the population of Kris Allen’s home state voted for their Idol 38 million times, pushing him past the heavily favored Lambert. Not long after, the story was retracted. Further, AT&T (an official American Idol sponsor) admitted that some of their employees may have taught fans at parties in Arkansas on election night how to blast 3,000 to 5,000 votes apiece via a special AT&T power texting technique. It is also clear that no such information was released to Adam Lambert backers in California that night.
The company denied they were tracking such text message votes from Arkansas.
Let’s look at the population numbers
Here’s some overwhelming math. California (Adam Lambert’s home state) has over 36 million people. Kris Allen’s home state of Arkansas has under three million. California has more people in any of its major cities that Arkansas has in the state entire. Hmmm…
Plus Adam Lambert had an insanely devoted fan base. This is common with American Idol contestants who reach the final rounds. Kris Allen had the same, but likely of lesser number. Not only that, but Lambert’s theatricality (which includes a five-octave vocal range) made him a heavy favorite. Kris Allen’s voice, while pleasant, has nowhere near the same power. I found him to be too soft on many of the songs he performed.
Was it his lifestyle that prompted the American Idol voting controversy?
The rumor mill (as well as my keen senses) led me to believe that Adam Lambert may have had a strike or two against him in the minds of conservative Christian voters. Namely, he’s rumored to be gay. I don’t see what that has to do with who wins a singing competition, but I know that some people choose not to look past such details. A San Francisco portal Examiner correspondent by the name of Ken Fish put it this way: “What I do have a problem with is the fact that the conservative core of this country will do anything to push their agenda. They did it with the Prop 8 battle, they’ve done it with American Idol, and I think it is safe to assume that they’ll do it again when the next thing comes up that they find even mildly objectionable.”
As Sabatini sees it, American Idol is reflective of American couch culture. “Allen and his pretty blond wife from the sticks against the dressed-up and made-up Lambert from Southern California. Gay vs. straight, poster pin up vs. Broadway star. Red State v. Blue State. You name it.” I find it to be gross oversimplification, but that’s as far as some people get. Cross the line, they knock down their toys and run home.
The competitors were gracious
They appeared to get along well, but remember television’s power to obscure the truth. Adam Lambert and Kris Allen could be obese anteaters who sweat Axe body spray. I don’t truly know. Whether AT&T skewed the vote due to pressure from religious groups, whether Simon Fuller and Idol were complicit in such a fix, or if this is all just sour grapes from an Adam Lambert conspiracy theorist is uncertain. The less than three million folks in Arkansas could have voted 38,000,000 times. It’s possible, and hardly illegal.
